On Conserving Nanshan Gravesite: A liminal landscape threaded with a multiplicity of heritage | 保育南山公墓:與多重遺產交織的臨界地景

Abstract

The discussion on Nanshan Gravesite as a cultural landscape has been addressed by scholars and grassroots organizations to bring public attention to the Gravesite's value in historical and memorial context. In this article, we focus on the multiplicity of the Gravesite from two perspectives. First, we examine its dynamic relationship with the public and the surrounding built environment through the idea of in-betweenness, constructing as argument of the liminality of the Gravesite. Second, we argue that individual headstones, taken as a whole, along with the natural environment where these headstones are located, together construct a site-specific installation. This argument echoes the concept of a cultural landscape to some extent, focusing on the interrelationship between the constructed work (tombs and headstones) and a particular location or site (natural environment/individual headstones taken as a whole). In this regard, removing any headstone from the site is no different from destroying Nanshan Gravesite (the site-specific installation). We aim to shed light on the multifaceted Nanshan Gravesite from the perspective of art, providing a new way of thinking about the Gravesite. In summary, we attempt to link the idea of integrity in cultural landscape to the completeness of site specificity by viewing Nanshan Gravesite as a site-specific installation. We then make the case for maintaining the integrity of Nanshan Gravesite is the primary concern regarding preservation strategy on the Gravesite from the perspective of historic context and art.

南山公墓作為文化景觀的討論已經受到眾多文化研究學者和公民組織的關注,引發公眾關注公墓在歷史和紀念脈落中的價值。在本文中,我們從兩個面向探討墓地的多重性。首先,我們透過「中間性」的概念,闡釋了它與公眾和周圍建築環境的動態關係,建構了墓地作為「臨界性」的論點。其次,從藝術概念的角度剖析南山公墓,我們認為,個別的墓碑構成一個整體,以及這些墓碑所在的自然環境,兩者的交織共同建構了場域特定性。這一觀點與文化景觀的概念在某種程度上相呼應;尤其在於建構作品(墓及墓碑)與特定地點或場所(自然環境\整體的個別墓碑)之間的相互關係。在場域特定性概念的脈絡下探討南山公墓,從場所移走任何一個墓碑無異於摧毀南山公墓。我們旨在從藝術的角度闡明南山公墓的多面性,意圖提供一種新的思考墓地的方式。簡而言之,我們試圖將文化景觀的完整性的思想與南山公墓作為特定場所的完整性相聯繫,從歷史背景和藝術的角度,維護南山公墓的完整性是公墓保存策略的主軸。
